The Achievable New Year's Resolution | CrossFit Alpha Strike

Every year we hear it. “My New Year’s Resolution is to exercise more and live a healthier lifestyle.” We hear it from 99% of our friends. I bet you’ve made that promise to yourself five new — or old (?) — years ago. Tell me what happened. Yup, I guessed right. There’s not much to tell. The problem is that people don’t have a game plan or they think they do but they don’t. I’ve heard of quite a few people purchase 1 year membership at commercial gyms but only end up going five times a year. At the most. Meanwhile, I’ve come to know people who gave CrossFit a try even for just a month (it usually costs maybe 3 months in a commercial gym) but sign up for a whole year right after. Yes, maybe for double or triple the commercial gym fee but I tell you they go to the box (CrossFit gym) as if it’s part of their system. Like they couldn’t function without it. It’s like how your heart beats, how you blink, how you breathe. If you stop, you die.

This is me and how I look when I talk about going to CrossFit Alpha Strike. This is also me telling you exactly how you can finally keep your resolution of becoming fit, sexy, healthy, and strong.

I could give you a million reasons why Filipinos, specially the girls, don’t want to CrossFit but then I’d be making excuses for them. I’m an architecture student from the University of the Philippines and God knows it’s one of the most difficult courses there is. There are no hell weeks because they’re hell months; there are no sleepless nights because there are sleepless weeks. But we have to make time. We have to find that right balance between work, rest, play, and recreation. For me, CrossFit is rest, play, and recreation all rolled into one.

People think CrossFit is for experts, for the elite, for the already strong, something you have to train for. Wrong. I had no physical background whatsoever as a kid. I’m the person who doesn’t play basketball but gets injured and dislocates her finger because the ball somehow decides to bounce off of it. Now, two or so years into CrossFit, I just keep surprising myself with what I can do.

If you have to start at the most basic of the basic, then so be it. It’s okay. You’re not alone and the coaches will make sure you go past your perceived limits. What’s incredible about it is that you do the program with other members no matter how stronger or faster they are compared to you. You do the same thing, you all struggle, but you also experience the same high. Then you’ll discover a few weeks from when you started that you’re not even the same anymore.

You get to measure yourself and set achievable goals in realistic time spans. I didn’t even practice or anything before I discovered I could already do a pistol squat like in the next photo. I just kept training until I could strengthen as much parts of my body as I could and it enabled me to do things I never thought I could.

The benefits go beyond the physical improvements (and let me tell you that they are uh-mazing!!!) The challenging workouts we do day in and out creates strong-willed individuals, build character and discipline, and develops general positivity towards life.

The best thing is that you get to share your achievements with the other members who become like family to you.

Despite our different backgrounds, in the box we all go through the same struggles together and we rise up from them together as well.

I’m pretty sure Choi, the only boy (in this photo at least), is giving a thumbs up because he has a bunch of pretty girls around him. :”> hahaha! I don’t know about you but, for me, being strong and healthy definitely makes a girl beautiful.

We are a team. We are a family. We are CrossFit Alpha Strike.

Now it’s time for you to prove to yourself that you can keep that resolution! ;) Drop by our box at 189 Maginhawa corner Makadios Street, Sikatuna Village, Quezon City. It’s 3 minutes away from UP and 5 minutes away from Ateneo de Manila University, if there’s no traffic of course. Schedule a Trial WOD (workout of the day) with Coach Angee 0917 655 5044. Or better yet, sign up for a whole year! Hope to see you!
