Fumiko & Apple Allergies

Let me give you some history. Both the kids and I suffer from allergies. We’re all on allergy medication. I don’t eat a lot of apples or pears. They both give me a stomach ache and are hard for me to eat. I don’t like soft fruit, I can’t stand the texture, so I eat my fruit on the hard side. Since I am missing so many teeth and have so many broken teeth, that’s really hard. A few weeks ago I picked up a couple of Asian Pears when we went grocery shopping, because I hadn’t purchased any in a long time and they smelled good. Along with those I picked up about 4 peaches. The kids scarfed up the peaches and left the pears. So I decided to slice one up to eat. I sat down with a knife and ate a couple of slices. I noticed my tongue and mouth started to hurt really bad, then my mouth and throat started to burn. When I looked in the mirror my tongue had some big raw spots on it and my mouth was swollen. Then I noticed my arm had a huge rash where I had carried the pear. I broke out in hives on my arm and some on my face.

From there I proceeded to look up symptoms online and found pear and apple allergies. Apparently they can be common for those with hayfever allergies because they all have birch pollen in common. Fumiko had been getting stomach aches and “sore throats” constantly for months. It dawned on me that it might be from all the apples she was eating. So I asked her if her throat hurt or if her mouth and throat burned. She told me her mouth and throat burned. So I asked if it did that all the time or if it was just when she ate. She said when she ate apples she got a sore throat and tummy ache. So no more apples. From what I read it was supposed to be raw pears and apples, however yesterday at school they gave Fumiko apple juice.

I got an email yesterday morning from the school principal telling me Fumiko developed a rash all over her face and forehead. They needed me to pick her up because they were afraid it was contagious. I had emailed them a couple of weeks prior when I first suspected the allergy and told them she wasn’t to have apples or pears. So we picked her up and the first thing I asked was what she had for breakfast. She had apple juice. *face palm* By the time we got home she had hives all over her face, her mouth and throat were burning and swollen and she just didn’t feel good. I started her on benadryl and put some cream on her face. She’s been taking benadryl regularly since yesterday. The swelling and burning in her mouth and throat went away yesterday, but she’s still got hives. They got fairly bad last night, are better today, but they’re still all over.

She wasn’t able to go to school because of the rash today. The school nurse and principal assured me it was in her record now. I was told that Fumiko needed to remember to not have apples at school… I know that they have buttons and whatnot for the kids at school with allergies. An apple allergy is no different than a nut allergy. We have a doctors appointment on Friday. The school wants her to come back with an epi pen and see an allergist. Hopefully I can get an epi pen from the doctor, I don’t know what will happen about an allergist. I’ll see what the doctor says. The hives have cleared up a little bit throughout the day, so I don’t think an emergency trip is necessary, however I’m a little worried about her getting into apple again. The reaction escalated quickly. So from now on our apartment is apple and pear free. I’m going to try to get a bracelet or something when I can that lists it as an allergy. Apples are a no-go bro.
