Lego Man Embroidery Hoop Art
Hello Sugar Bee Craft Readers! It’s Nancy from www.dosmallthingswithlove.com here to share another felty creation. Last month I took a break from felt and shared a simple embroidery project (another one of my passions) but this month I am back to felt and excited to share this Lego Man Embroidery Hoop Art with you.
Okay, quick question: anyone else out there have a little boy or girl OBSESSED with Legos, or am I the only one? And, anyone else see that obsession grow even bigger after watching The Lego Movie.
Well, we live in a lego reality over here. I feel like I am constantly stepping on legos, picking up legos, owwing and ahhhing over the newest creation, building with legos myself and (of course) singing “Everything is Awesome.” That song has basically been in my head since, well, July.
And so, because we are finally organizing and decorating our playroom I thought it might be fitting to have a little art dedicated to the man himself–the Lego Man that is. And so, here is a very simple felt and embroidery hoop project that can be created is a matter of minutes: Lego Man Embroidery Hoop Art.
First off, supplies. For this project you will need:
- Red, Yellow and Blue felt (I use 100% wool, but acrylic or a blend would also work for this project)
- Paper, pencil and scissors
- Clear Packing Tape
- Sewing Machine with black thread
- 10″ Wooden Embroidery Hoop
- White Canvas Material
- Hot Glue Gun
- Black Puff Paint
- Black Sharpie Marker
As a first step, draw, trace an outline of the lego man. I just pulled up a picture of him on my computer, zoomed in until he was as tall as a standard 8×10 sheet of paper, taped the paper to the screen and traced. Make sure to include the lines that show where the arms are, as well as the lines that separate the head, chest and legs and the details on the legs.
Once you have your lego man shape drawn, cut it out.
Use the clear packing tape to tape the lego man outline (your pattern) directly to the yellow felt. The tape will hold your pattern in place better and flatter than pins. Cut around the entire thing.
Next, take you lego man pattern and cut out the shirt and pants so they are separate. Using the clear packing tape again, cut out a red shirt and blue pants that you will lay on top of the yellow body.
Once you have all your pieces cut, head over the the sewing machine. Pin the pieces in place and sew around the outside of the shirt and pants. Then go back and add the details of arms and feet. Once this is done, hot glue the lego guy to the white canvas you stretched in your embroidery hoop. I designed mine to that the lego man is slightly bigger than my hoop and he hangs off the bottom. I like this effect, but if you don’t use a bigger hoop or make your lego guy a little smaller.
Finally, add a few finishing details. Use the black puff paint to add a moth and eyes. Also, use the sharpie to add a few words–I of course added the only words that made sense to me–Everything is Awesome!
