F/W 2013: NYFW Dispatch #1

Gigi Engle of Caro Marketing outside the Lauren Moffatt presentation.

Yes, it’s that time of year again. Fashion Week is back, and I’m excited about it. Today I had the pleasure of loitering outside of presentations by Lauren Moffatt, Whit, and the Gilded Age. Lots of leather pants. Backpacks. Fur of the fake and (I assume) real varieties.

Claire Geist of the blog De Lune outside the Whit show at the W Hotel.

After a week of dealing with WordPress issues that are beyond my ken, The Styley is ready to rock. One piece of good news is that I’m shooting for Snap, an online magazine by the makers of the awesome camera app Hipstamatic. And of course I’ll be shooting for myself. Expect to see much Hipstamatic action. Like the images above.

In case you were wondering, there is no bad news.

But there are a few lessons. Already. They are:

1) Do not trust the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week website to tell you which shows are happening where and when. The list is not comprehensive. You will have to do your own research, at which time you might find yourself feeling grateful about the fact that you taught college writing and research skills for a decade. An easier way of going about the whole thing is to befriend the right PR people, in which case you will have nothing to worry about.

2) Do put your phone on Airplane Mode to conserve the energy you need to take photographs with said phone. But remember to take it off Airplane Mode on a fairly regular basis so that you can check your various feeds. And your email.

3) If you want to shoot streetstyle outside a show, but you don’t know the location of the show, do tweet the designers in question. If they’re anything like the peeps at Gilded Age, they’ll tweet you back. So cool.

That’s all for now.
