@ home on block island (in a prefab home)

Hello, there!

Today, a look at the prefab Summer home of famed modern furniture designer Jens Risom, on Block Island- and island off of Rhode Island.

The Risom’s often vacationed on the island, as it reminded Jens of his childhood Summers in native Denmark. Once they found the perfect spot, on the northern tip of the island, Risom set out to find a company that would work with him to bring in a kit to assemble a structure on the locale. For just over $20,000, he was able to customize a kit that would include 20 foot ceilings and a wall made of glass facing in the direction of the best view.

Somehow this prefab home felt appropriate for Earth Day week and I’ll tell you why. Rather than tearing it down and building ‘bigger and better’ as is so often the sad case, this home is still standing over 45 years later. The new generations of the Risom family are still enjoying, taking care of repairs and maintenance as it arises. Jens Risom himself, now 97, still enjoys visits to the island home.
