Number Sense & a Freebie!

One of the best things we can do for our little friends at the beginning of the year is set a strong foundation in numeracy & number sense. If y'all have been reading this blog for 5 minutes, you might already know that I absolutely LOVE teaching math. BIG love it. Which is funny considering I still call my mom when I'm trying to figure out how much money I'm going to save when there's a sale. I can figure out 50% off like a champ....and if there's anything more than that I know I'm winning...but start throwing in 15%, 20%, 30%, etc. and well...let's just say there's a reason the primary grades are my wheelhouse :) #noshame
One of the best resources I introduced to my class last year were my little number posters. They were the perfect anchor for introducing various forms of numbers. I hung them where the kids had access to them all year long & it was cool to see them refer back to them when they needed extra support.

These desk tags are also a MUST. I absolutely LOVE them.

And all of my kids keep a laminated number line in their desks as well. I'll typically have them pull it out during transitional times and we'll "walk the line" using number line riddles.
These puzzles were clutch...especially at the beginning of the year. It's so interesting to see how much the kids know and understand when they enter Kindergarten. These stayed in the dessert tubs for the first few months of school.

One of the biggest obstacles...especially at the beginning of the year...is getting kids to properly form their numbers. Speaking of which, don't forget about this little trick I shared back in April!

This year I wanted to give the kids an opportunity to not only practice writing their numbers, but to recognize the various forms as well. I created this little number book as an "extra" practice activity and wanted to share it with y'all...for free, of course!

Hope you can use this in your classroom this year, too!

I'd love to know what some of your most favorite back to school number sense activities include! I'm always looking for exciting ways to engage my kids in math!
