We Can’t Breathe

It feels like none of us can breathe right now. When our fellow man is treated unfairly, it effects all of us.

Martin Luther King Jr. said,
“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”

This week I’ve been talking with my two oldest children, ages 13 & 15, about the events in Ferguson, Staten Island, and Cleveland. They ask, why does this happen? How can it happen?

My friends, we must must be willing to listen to the experiences of those whose life experiences are different from our own. We must acknowledge our own privilege and really be willing to hear the pain of our brothers and sisters who experience racism, bias, and discrimination on a daily basis. We must stop pretending that everyone’s life is a mirror of our own.

I agree with Dr. King. We must all stand for justice. We must call upon one another to love. We must speak out against injustice. When we stand together, unarmed truth and unconditional love can win.
