5 Favorites: Ways to Lead

Everybody is a leader in some way – everyone has the capacity to rise up and be a role model for those looking for guidance. Leading takes on many forms, and it comes down to how you want to express yourself and your passions. Let’s start with the most common form, even though it can be a bit scary for some…

The One Young World Summit

Public Speaking

When people think of leaders they think of public speakers. Actually, many amazing speakers out there aren’t actually extroverts; they get nervous in front of large crowds too. However, in order to lead in their field, they get used to the idea! I’ve spoken at many events, and nervousness comes with the territory, but this way of influencing others encourages us to speak our minds. It’s not that there aren’t enough natural-born leaders out there, it’s that people are afraid to speak their minds. So speak up! You can make a world of difference this way.

The Written Word

Some prefer to make their mark with their words. Writing is so powerful and what’s more, reading is equally powerful. That’s one of the reasons I decided to write a book. I know as a reader that many others look up to those who put their thoughts onto the page. If you only think of the physical act of speaking as a way to lead, you don’t reach those who respond better to text. If you’re passionate about writing, start a blog or find a means to put your thoughts out into the world, it’s such a great way to find likeminded individuals and spark discussion.

Activism

Activism has many forms, but taking to the streets to fight for what you believe in is a powerful way to influence the masses. It takes leaders to organize groups that protest on the sidewalks, and everyone has what it takes – all you need is the passion and drive about issues that affect you. Not all protests are morally right however… you have to find a way to stand up to the issues facing our society in a meaningful, effective way.

By Example

Similar to activism, setting a good example is a great way to lead. If you think you’re not the type of person to step up to a podium, write a book, or organize a protest, fear not – you can still become a leader. It doesn’t always mean being front and center. Little actions serve as positive reinforcements for others. Whenever you are out in public, people are affected by what you do more than you know! Use that power to make a difference.

Using the Internet

One way to bring all of these elements together is to harness technology in order to become a leader. One type of public speaking I do constantly is through my videos. And I write through my blog posts. Anyone with an internet connection can. We should all be aware of what a gift it is to be able to go online and build relationships and express our art. If you have a story to tell or skill to teach, bring your talents to the online community!

Have you ever considered yourself a leader?
