Painted Roses Blanket

Many moons ago, when I was a much younger bod, I used to read the Swallows and Amazons books. I'm sure many of you did too? I loved them all, but I remember after reading one of them where they stayed in a canal or narrowboat, Coots Club was it? Ever since them I've wanted to stay on a narrowboat, it all sounded quite exciting and I was quite taken with the idea.

I haven't stayed on one yet, although it's definitely still on the wishlist. The reason I mention it is that my flowery squares of crochet above remind me of the painted roses that you so often see on narrowboats. That beautiful style of decoration is apparently called Castle and Roses and it's so cheery and bright, a wonderful way to bring colour into the everyday.

So, because of that I've decided to call this little throw the Painted Roses Blanket. It's quite as bright and joyful as the painted versions I think and I hope you like it too.

I've also, shock of shocks, I've included some black in this blanket. A colour I was pretty sure I would never have a use for. Never say never eh? I went with the yellow centers originally and I love those but something made me try one with a black middle and I really like how different and strong that looks too.
In fact, I was so torn as to which colour to use that I ended up including both. As I've stuck to the same colour for the rest of the flowers and all the squares, I like that there is still a little bit of difference in there to stop the whole thing becoming to uniform.

I've gone with a bit of a different style border for me too. After I made the Desert Cushion I've been wanting to use crochet to join squares together again and I wanted the border to blend in with this style so it took quite a bit of time testing out ideas to come up with something that I thought looked right and that I was happy with. I'm really pleased with how it turned out though, I think it kind of suits the rest of it just nicely.

Anyway, it's so lovely to finally get the chance to share this blanket with all of you. I've shared the odd glimpse on the here and on my Instagram account before and I know many of you have been waiting oh so patiently for me to show you some more, so it's a joy to finally be able to do that. I hope you like it, it's certainly given me a lot of joy to make it.
There's just one last thing to tell you and that's to say that I've made a pattern up for this one too. So if you'd like to make a little (or large) blanket for yourself then you can go ahead and do that - yippee!
