Who Run's The World?

We are so excited to have our first Guest Blogger! Our first guest post shares her passion for running and how to get started. With summer just around the corner let's show them who run's the world and hit those running trails ladies! Enjoy...
I used to hate running, with a passion. A million years ago (ok, not literally), on our first day of basketball practice in high school, our coach had us run “the lake”- which is about 4 miles around. I was convinced I was dying and each time we were forced to run, my teammates and I would try to find shortcuts to get out of the run. If you would’ve told me back then that I would be running half-marathons, I would’ve probably laughed in your face.

Fast forward to today, when running has become, ironically, my passion. It didn’t come fast, and it didn’t come easy. Here’s what was helpful for me:
  • Start slow. Not many people go from running zero miles a week to a half-marathon without much work. I started by just running one mile, then slowly adding up my mileage. If you’re a total newbie running, a program like Couch to 5k might be helpful for you.
  • Find a running buddy (particularly someone who is faster than you, if you want to work on speed!). Running buddies keep you accountable and can help you push yourself. My own running buddy was a lot faster than me, which inspired me to keep pushing and work towards getting to her pace.
  • Sign up for a race, starting with a 5K. No lie, the first 5k that I ran got me hooked. The feeling when I crossed the finish line was unbelievable and I wanted to feel that again. Plus, I wanted to beat my time. The beauty of running is that you are competing only with yourself and there are a million of little goals that you can set for yourself and achieve. (Websites like Active.com allow you to search for races in your area)

There are so many other reasons why I love running now. Here are just a few.
  • The running community is absolutely amazing, whether it’s local running clubs, or a larger community, such as the Run Nike Women Series. There’s a reason why there was such an uproar (aside from the obvious monstrosity of the act) from the Boston Marathon bombing and how the running community just absolutely pulled together (like this story here).
  • You definitely get a “runner’s high” from the adrenaline and endorphins.
  • So many times my body felt as if I couldn’t finish another mile, or run at a faster pace…but when I put my mind to it, I’ve learned that the mind truly is stronger than the body.
  • Running gives me the time to zone out or let everything out, depending on what’s happening for me. Sometimes I just need a mental break and use running as a time to decompress. Or sometimes I need to just let all my emotions out…running has been incredibly therapeutic.
  • And sometimes you get medals and sometimes you get Tiffany’s jewelry boxes passed out by hot firemen. No big deal.
