London: to the Borough Market with me!

Wie dacht dat ik mijn man tijdens zijn eerste bezoek aan Londen alleen maar stoffenwinkel in, wolwinkel uit heb gesleept, heeft het mis! Er is namelijk iets wat wij allebei heel graag doen als we reizen en dat is eten. In London zul je nooit, maar dan ook nooit, omkomen van de honger. Er is een enorme keuze aan restaurants, pubs en cafés. Van superhip en pop-up tot ouderwetse bruine pubs en theehuizen waar je met scones and clotted cream om de oren wordt geslagen. Maar wij wilden heel graag op ontdekkingsjacht en voor een prikkie allemaal lekkere dingen proberen. Dus spendeerden we uren, maar dan ook uren, op de Borough Market.

Those of you who thought that I schlepped my husband to all the fabric and yarn stores on his first visit to London is mistaken! 'Cause there's something we both love to do when we're travelling, and that's eating. Now, in London you'll never, ever go hungry. There's such an amazing choice of restaurants, cafés and pubs. Ranging from hip and pop-up eateries to good ol' fashioned and chique places where you can still have scones and clotted cream. But we like to explore and taste lots and lots of food. So it was off to the Borough Market with us, where we spend hours and hours and hours.

Het zou bijna de moeite zijn om in Londen een appartement te huren, want het lijkt me zalig om hier overdag uitgebreid boodschappen te doen en 's avonds te koken en alles lekker op te smikkelen. Dat is dan ook wel weer charmant, want je kunt op de Borough Market terecht voor luxe kaasjes, vis, vleeswaren, wild en lekkernijen uit allerlei windstreken. Maar je kunt dus ook gewoon je rode kool en snijbiet kopen. Overigens komen chefs van Londense toprestaurants ook hun inkopen doen hier op de markt. Dus je bent in goed gezelschap.

It's totally worth it to rent an appartment in London. I mean, how great would it be to do all your grocery shopping here during the day. Then returning to your appartment to cook and eat all those goodies. And that's so charming about this market. At Borough Market you can buy luxurious and specialty chesses, fish, meat, game and yummyness from allover the world. But if you just want some chard and cabbage for dinner, you're welcome to grab a bag and help yourself too. A lot of chefs from toprestaurants in London come and do their groceries here, so you're in good company.

Wie denk dat je in Engeland alleen fish & chips kunt eten zit er zo naast. In Engeland vind je de beste vis en schelpdieren ter wereld. En laat ik daar nou helemaal gek op zijn. Nee, zuignappen, hoofdjes, ogen, scharen doen mij helemaal niets. Ik vind het gewoon lekker. En wees eerlijk, voor deze prijzen zou iedereen met oesters en een wijntje lunchen. Elke dag.

England really is more than just eating fish & chips from a sheet of newspaper. You can buy the best seafood and fish in the world here. And oh, how I love that. Nope, I really don't care about the heads, the suckers, the claws and the eyes. I think it's all delicious. 'Cause seriously, for these prices everyone should have oysters and white whine for lunch. Every day.

Voor degene die niet zo'n sterke maag hebben: niet getreurd. Ook voor een zoetig toetje is de Borough Market een goede plek. Ik probeerde de aardbei en balsamico azijn truffels (goddelijk), Turkish delight (mierzoet) en twee pasteis de nata bij een schattige Portugese verkoper (toppers! Nou ja, de pasteis, de verkoper was gewoon aandoenlijk).

For those of you that can't stomach all that seafood, don't worry. There's always room for dessert at the Borough Market. I tried strawberry and balsamic vinegar truffels (heavenly), Turkish delight (oh, so sweet) and two pasteis de nata at the endearing Portugese stall (fantastic! Well, the pasteis, the salesman was just sweet).
