Shop Talk: The Well Coiffed Closet

Always the go-to girl for fashion tips among friends and acquaintances, Megan Evans realized that she could turn her passion and skills into a business. Now based in three cites across the U.S., The Well Coifed Closet is thriving. Megan and her colleagues provide expert assistance to ease a range of sartorial stresses, from styling to shopping to organizing. Today, Megan is discussing how her business came to fruition—and her whole team is sharing its favorite seasonal picks!

What sparked your interest in the fashion industry?
I grew up with a very stylish mother, so I was around clothes and learned designers at a young age. It was always something on the front of my mind that I loved to play with, even when I went through my college hippie phase.

For those who aren’t familiar, describe The Well Coiffed Closet.
The Well Coiffed Closet is a company based in New York, Los Angeles and Charleston, South Carolina that offers a creative blend of services to help clients find their personal style. I am a Certified Image Consultant, which has given the company a respectful credibility and allows clients to trust our organic process. We like to say we do celebrity style for everyday people. We help with everything from color consultation and body type analysis to closet editing, organizing and personal shopping. We even do trip packing, personal look books and red carpet styling.

How did you decide to take the leap and start your own business?
I used to help friends clean out their closets and pick out outfits as a hobby. So when people kept telling me that I should do this for a living, I decided to go for it.

What makes The Well Coiffed Closet a unique company?
The fact that I have trained two other fabulous women—and that, between the three of us, we service clients in New York, Los Angeles and Charleston (mainly). We also travel to wherever our clients’ homes are. Having colleagues around the country allows us to collaborate with each other on our clients’ shopping needs as well as promote local stores to find goodies.

What’s been the most exciting opportunity so far?
Being asked to co-host a personal shopping event in two different cities with Cynthia Rowley. I felt like I had reached a certain level with my business.

What are three pieces in your own closet you couldn’t live without?
My brown Rag & Bone booties, my grandmother’s vintage fur and my scarves.

Where do you see yourself, and the company, in five years?
I could see myself developing a training program for stylists and expanding to other cities.

How do you sparkle?
I sparkle with a fresh face, my smile and by being kind.
