To layer or not to layer

I always tell people that the easiest way to add interest to your look is to layer. This is especially true when you are wearing basics. On the other hand, there is something to be said about a clean, simple look. I struggled with which way I wanted to approach this particular outfit. I was diggin' the clean, retro vibe, but kept asking myself if it looked too boring. I added the shirt underneath, which created an ease and effortlessness to the look. Things are never black and white. I can't say I always like a layered look more than a clean, simple one. It depends on my mood and the vibe I get from a particular piece. In this case, and with these pants, I actual prefer the non-layered look. The layer seems to shorten my legs, and the clean look just seems to fit with the retro vibe of the pants. Which do you prefer?
