Hola Sweet Taters!!! At long last, my April Blog-Along has begun! I'm so excited to be committing to 30 days of blogging. The last time I did this, I found so many wonderful new blog to read, made some new friends, and stretched my blogging muscles in a way that only this kind of personal challenge can stretch them!
I will be popping in here every day for 30 days to blog my heart out. Sometimes, I will get personal. Sometimes, I will just share an image or some art I'm working on. I will keep it as real as I can, even when that means I tell you I'm having a craptacular day. At the end of each post, you will find a Linky. Use it to include your latest post in the Blog-Along. There are no prizes except that new folks might find your blog and you get to find new folks. It isn't a competition or contest to see who can do it and who can't. It's a personal challenge, meant to increase your awareness and build your blogging habit.
For me, blogging is self-care. Much like journaling, blogging helps me take a longer, more mindful look at what's really happening in my life - around me & within me. Composing a blog post to describe that is therapeutic and creative - two things I value very much. Your reasons might differ. You might just want to build your blog audience or find new blogs to read. You might want to start a new blog with a bang. Whatever your reasons, you're totally welcome to take my hand as we dive into this adventure together!!
When I first opened the package containing the Sacred Hearts Series up and took a look, the first words that came to mind were "grafitti" and "grunge". There is something about these stencils that lends itself perfectly to the messier, looser, more graphic style that I've been experimenting with lately.
The first thing I wanted to do with them was to trace one onto a clean sheet of paper to get a sense for how easy they would be to work with. I started with pencil and then retraced with plan pen.
My next urge was to play with Tombow Markers, though I new I'd want to take it a bit further with paint and inks. Sometimes that first layer of marker helps loosen me up.
Next up, I started to play with inks and paints to see how much of a mess I could make.
I worked a bit with some paint markers in this layer to bring my roses back out of the background.
As I was working, the words "Love is messy, Love is kind" came to me. This sentiment just felt right for the messy, grungy, irreverent feeling of the page. There's a lot going on in this shot - I added 'light' around the heart with paint marker, made little dots all around the piece with the same marker, added more drippage and some lettering.
In this layer, I outlined my letters, added some symbols and scribbles, and added the words "Sometimes stupid, sometimes blind..." to my sentiment. I was beside myself with giggling over my rhyming skillz. :)
At this point the spread felt done. I wish I had done it on watercolour paper as I did struggle a bit with all these layers on the sketch paper I'd opted to use. Next time, I will know better!
These stencils make me ridiculously happy. They are 6x6 inches, so very handy for journaling. The details are lovely and perfect for personal embellishment. All in all, a very satisfying experiment.
Leave a comment below and tell me what YOU'D do with them!! Every comment will be entered in a drawing for a set of stencils delivered to your door! Drawing closes on April 5th and the winner will be announced on Monday, April 7th.
