An Interview with Mr. Monopoly

The wait is finally over! Today our MONOPOLY Collection launches at ALEX AND ANI retail locations, online at www.alexandani.com and select retailers worldwide. This collection, our first of licensed products to be sold internationally, is a celebration of one of the world’s oldest and most cherished board games. Featuring our signature expandable wire bangles adorned with the dog, cat, car and house game tokens reimagined as charms, this whimsical collection is sure to ring nostalgic to fans of all ages.

To celebrate this special occasion, we’re excited to share an interview with Mr. Monopoly himself – the face of the iconic board game! We dish about how he got his start, his status as a pop culture icon, and how he feels about our collaboration. It’s a must read!

AA: Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with us, Mr. Monopoly! It’s an honor to be in the presence of such a legendary icon.

MM: You are too kind, sir! I am thrilled to be here.

AA: Tell our fans a little bit about yourself. You have quite the fascinating history and are loved by MONOPOLY fans around the world.

MM: (laughs) Yes, I’m proud to say I have been part of the MONOPOLY brand since the 1930s. I had a knack for business and enjoyed previous successful ventures, but I was looking for a way to break into the big leagues. I caught wind of a new board game being developed and the rest, as they say, is history.

AA: Fascinating! It must be humbling to know that a classic game is named after you.

MM: Actually, I suppose you could say I named myself after the game. You see, sir, my name used to be “Rich Uncle Pennybags.” However, as the game’s popularity grew, more and more fans referred to me as “Mr. Monopoly.” The moniker began to grow on me and I eventually officially changed my name. It took some getting used to, but I must admit, it’s much easier to sign checks now! (laughs)

AA: We would imagine so! I’m sure that your “reinvention” has helped the game remain the world’s favorite property trading game for close to 80 years as well. Speaking of new ventures, we’re excited about our collaboration. Would you like to share some details about the MONOPOLY Collection at ALEX AND ANI?

MM: I’m equally as excited. The MONOPOLY Collection features your company’s popular expandable wire bangles adorned with four of our iconic Monopoly game tokens reimagined as charms – the dog, car, house and of course the newest member of our MONOPOLY token family – thanks to a monumental world vote in 2013 – the cat. I also understand that this is your first collection of licensed product to be sold at select retailers internationally. It’s wonderful that MONOPOLY fans worldwide will get to experience the collection.

AA: This is true! We’re proud of the collection and thrilled to offer it to fans around the world. It looks fantastic and we hope fans love it.

MM: Yes, it is quite brilliant. Not only is it the result of a collaboration between two great companies, it has an emotional connection as well. Everyone has their favorite MONOPOLY token that they use each time they play, and now they can carry it with them every day. It’s almost as good as collecting $200 when you pass “Go,” right? (laughs)

AA: We couldn’t agree more! Thank you so much for your time, Mr. Monopoly. I know you have a busy schedule.
