Glitchezzz

The other day I posted a portrait of Trent Reznor which I painted in oil paint, photographed and then glitched by messing around with the file’s code and compression settings. To get the glitched look I spent a few days researching glitch techniques and conducting a heap of experiments.

By the time I’d started getting the hang of it I’d broken countless files and generated almost as many unpredictably abstracted new images. Some were completely unrecognizable from the original source image (fashion photos) and some were only slightly changed.

I created and posted the gif animations below to show the ‘depth’ (for want of a better word) of the new images that came out of the glitching process. Apart from the last animation, these are all glitches from one original photo (Jens Ingvarsson photo of Nastya Kusakina). The gifs show aspects of the image that are present in the glitched still image, but not visible. By animating them, I was able to reveal those hidden aspects and see the full range of the glitch’s effect on the original photo.

All I know about Glitching I learned from Stallio and Rosa Menkman. Also check Nick Briz and his excellent video glitching video tutorial.

Give the page a minute or two to load all the animation and let me know what you think in the comments.
