The Early Bird: Prabal Gurung x M.A.C.

Let’s play one of my favorite games. Imagine you had an unlimited gift card (liking this game so far?) and can pick to use it on any designer you can imagine. Who would you go for? Would you stock up on a classic like Chanel, or on an avant garde label (McQueen, maybe?) Perhaps you’re more of a modern kind of babe, and prefer minimalistic favorites from Acne or the prints from Proenza Schouler. Regardless, this is a question you probably have long had an answer for (and if you don’t, it’s so much fun to think about it, especially with Fashion Week coming up.

My answer for the question has most recently been Prabal Gurung. He’s a designer that spearheads a brand that just gets women, and season after season, presents us with pieces that are both glamorous, sexy, and meant to bring out our inner flair for drama. His collection with Target solidified his spot as one of my favorite designers, too: each and every one of the floral-print tops and bright frocks were to die for (or, okay, to line up at the crack of dawn for).

When the designer announced his collaboration with M.A.C., I couldn’t help but be floored. One of my favorite designers is joining forces with one of my holy grail beauty brands? Say it ain’t so.

Oh, but it is, and it’s glorious. The collection is comprised of 14 pieces, and is launching on November 26. Want a sneak peek? Catch a preview on the designer’s September 6th show. The pieces are absolutely lust-worthy, and understandably push the price point for M.A.C. Each piece is heavy, gold, and stunningly intricate. The bronzing powder, for example, will retail for $70, and one of the lipsticks or Lipglasses will come in at $30.

What I love most, though, is how Gurung describes his collection: “I always feel, whether it’s getting dressed or putting on makeup, it’s ritualistic, a very spiritual process that a woman has.” He describes the process as unlike something men get the chance to partake in, and that the time — whether it’s twenty minutes or an hour (try five minutes, buddy) — is time that a women spends solely by herself, trying to figure out how she wants to feel and look for the rest of the day. It’s a beautiful way to describe the typically decidedly unromantic act of getting ready in the morning.

Let me know if you plan on scooping up the collection when it hits stores!
