The Sunday Post: Dressing Up Your Bathroom

To me, my apartment is my sanctuary. I might not be the cleanest, neatest person around (anyone that has seen my desk can attest to that fact) but I always take a certain pride in being able to keep my place as spotless as I physically can. I don’t leave clothes lying around, dishes in the sink, or let the laundry pile stack up to the point where my only (questionably) clean clothes are the ones on my back. Actually, seeing as I’m in between places right now, consider this an ad for a perfect roommate. Post over.

Just kidding. To me, the most important room in any apartment is the bathroom. Not because of the, well, obvious, but I’ve always been a nerd about having a really, really clean room. To me, the ideal bathroom resembles a spa: all skincare either in the medicine cabinet or on special shelves, plush, monogrammed towels, candles. It’s a place that I want to be in at the end of the day because it’s zen-like, and helps me de-stress after a particularly rough time.

Here are my favorite ways at keeping your bathroom akin to a spa (and not just a place that’s a nightmare to clean).

Invest in candles. I didn’t believe in the power of a really great candle until I got my hands on Diptyque Baies, and fell in love. It doesn’t have to be a $60 candle, but a really great fragrance will be absolutely divine — especially for the nights that you choose to draw a bath. Not to mention, it’s kind of the most romantic thing ever.

Splurge on luxe towels. This isn’t so much for you as it is for the guests, but having a set of really nice, plush towels is absolutely essential for bathroom harmony. I like to get complementing colors — and if that isn’t an option, you can never go wrong with a soft turquoise shade. Monogramming optional.

Pretty bottles = pretty bathroom. Sure, your Bath & Body Works soap might smell like bottled happiness, but trust me: spend the extra couple bucks and get a pretty glass or metal bottle (preferably one that can be equipped with a pump). Plastic bottles tend to look cheap and decidedly un-chic, so swap them out. Plus, it’s good for the earth!

The little things are important, too. A friend of mine exclusively stocks Chanel cotton balls in her bathroom. Why, when you can get a giant bag from your local Walgreens for under $5? Well, they’re way more luxurious. They’re gentler on your face, don’t soak up as much product (so you’re not wasting half your La Prairie), and feel absolutely amazing. Plus, they’re total Instagram bait.

Cute shower curtains are key. If your shower doesn’t come equipped with a glass door, opt for the next best thing with curtains that reflect both the style and color scheme of the rest of the room. Plain white usually looks boring beyond words, so opt for a fun, girly print or a minimalistic stripe. They’re not expensive, so feel free to have a little fun! Don’t forget to change them frequently, too: a dirty curtain is about as cute as your loo after a night of food poisoning.
