Blue and Gold Prohibition Era Themed Wedding (Fab You Bliss)

Today’s bride and groom have the same name as each other. How fun is that? On top of that, these two have really great taste!

The inspiration for Kelly and Kelly’s 1920’s blue and gold prohibition era themed wedding reception came from their love for ‘Speakeasy’ cocktails, their fascination with the HBO hit show Boardwalk Empire, and their fondness for hosting themed costume events.

What a fab theme! I love that they asked all their guests to dress in the era’s fashion as well. And with Alison Mish Photography there to capture all the fun, they have these wonderful images to remember this amazing day!

From the bride:

After much thought, together we decided to have an intimate ceremony with just our immediate family in Charlottesville, Virginia (groom’s hometown) in May and host a separate celebration near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (bride’s hometown) in July after our honeymoon. Since our reception on July 12th was a celebration of our marriage rather than our actual wedding day, we were able to focus on hosting a fabulous party, rather than the traditions, emotions and stress associated with “the big day.”

As an interior designer, I was excited to tap into my creative side to craft my own décor and details. So, I enlisted the help of my mom and sister to implement my vision for the day. We used mainly feathers sprinkled with a few single faux flower buds, and all of the centerpieces as well as my bouquet were made about a month in advance. I designed, assembled and printed all of the invitations and the various signs, such as the table names which were themed after classic prohibition era libations and featured a description of how the cocktail came to be. The amazing ensemble of gourmet cookies on the sweets wagon were all homemade by my mother, Kathy Sigmund (over 180 dozen cookies to be exact)! No speakeasy lounge would be complete without cigars, therefore ours featured two excellent choices, provided by cigar expert, ‘Stogie Guys’ co-founder and our good friend, Patrick Semmens. The bar featured our two favorite classic cocktails, The Mrs. – The French 75 and The Mr. – The Classic Manhattan. In true Boardwalk Empire fashion, we had a caricature artist capturing our guests in their stunning 1920’s attire.

As for our attire, we used accessories to jazz up my husband’s suit and my wedding dress, both worn on our wedding day in May, and then I slipped into a glitzy dress prior to dinner and dancing. Also, I decided to do my own hair and makeup for the event.

For a moment during the cocktail hour, from afar my husband and I overlooked the beautiful venue and all of our guests in their 1920’s themed attire enjoying themselves, with the classic jazz of the era playing in the background, we knew that our celebration was already a success! We are so thankful that we listened to ourselves, broke the mold and had an intimate wedding ceremony and a separate celebration the way we really wanted!

How The Couple Met:

Kelly and Kelly met at their first job out of college, Burt Hill, an architectural and engineering firm in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC. Kelly was a designer in the interiors department when a young, self-assured mechanical designer was being introduced to his new colleagues. As Kelly stuck out his hand to introduce himself, he was greeted with “you HAVE to be kidding me…you’re a guy…named Kelly?” Taken back by her sassy demeanor, he did what any guy would do….he got back to his desk, sent her a message immediately and asked her to ‘hang out.’
So from that day on they lived happily ever after…not so much…

Kelly agreed to show Kelly around ‘her city’ (since her one whole year in DC made her an expert) and while they always felt this indescribable energy between them, they weren’t quite ready to be in a relationship. After several rocky months of back and forth flirtation and tension, the two co-workers decided to (not-so) secretly make their relationship official.

Almost six years later, they got married and continue to build their lives together, as Team Kelly…..who would have thought.
