Places to Stay: Riad Wow, Marrakech

Riad Wow

You may have seen me hashtagging #RiadWow on Instagram like crazy over my time in Marrakech – that’s because we were kindly invited to the vibrant city as guests of the brand new hotel. Comments on my Insta-snaps ranged from “Such riad, many wow“, to “Is that the name of the hotel, or just..Riad *WOW!*”..and really, all of those statements are true. Cheesy as it sounds, Riad Wow truly gave us a wow-worthy experience.

The Riad itself is within the old city walls (the medina), and just around the corner from the busy souks. With just twelve rooms, the riad feels more like you’re staying at somebody’s beautiful house than a hotel, intensified by the friendly staff, on hand to advise you and make sure your trip to Morocco goes beyond expectations.

If I look half asleep in the snaps above, it’s because I’d just finished up with a massage in the spa, followed by lounging by the bar on the roof in the sun (this is exactly how Miguel obtained the bright red nose that he’s currently sporting) – it all seems a million miles away from rainy London right now.

Marrakech

It was our first time in the city, and really I didn’t have a clue what to expect. I’d been told by friends (and my old pal the internet) that keeping covered up was a must, meaning my hunt for below-the-knee dresses covering the shoulders was on.

Wandering the souks with a guide, organised by the riad, was also a must. I’m not sure how we would have found our way around (and also into some of the best little shops) without him. The place is a total maze! We were shown the best place to buy Moroccan carpets, as well as where to go for the best spices and herbal remedies – I wasn’t in the market for a carpet, but walked away with some argan oil – an essential purchase if you’re visiting Morocco.

For the ladies asking about travelling to Marrakech alone – I can imagine that it would feel quite intimidating. I was glad to have Miguel by my side as we wandered round, as being from a culture where it isn’t the norm to stare or shout things at passing women can make it difficult not to be a bit anxious in these situations.

Despite that, you’ll have the best time on a trip to Marrakech. I was only there long enough for a very small taste of what the city had to offer, but I can’t wait to return again one day and discover more.

Thank you to Riad Wow and SnapTraveller for a wonderful trip!
