Gilded Pumpkins DIY

After spotting some beautiful gilded pumpkins at Anthropologie last year, I decided I wanted to try it myself and remembered it for the next fall season. Here we are, mid-September and I am busting out the fall decor! My favorite time of the year, even though a little part of me is sad to be leaving behind the summer warmth. We had a pretty mild summer here in Indiana so it just never felt like full fledged summer to me. Plus I was so busy that I didn't get to do a lot of normal summer activities so it all just flew by really fast. But moving on to the pumpkin season now <3

What you'll need to make your own gilded pumpkins:

A thin adhesive/glue (I used Mod Podge)

Gold leaf sheets or flakes

Any size pumpkins

First off, I picked out some adorable pumpkins for this project and then found the perfect gold leaf from Hobby Lobby. You can use sheets or flakes like mine picture above. I wanted imperfect gilding that looked a bit messy so I decided against sheets.

First thing you do is paint or spray on a light coat of adhesive to the pumpkin. Cover the whole pumpkin or just apply sparingly if you only want partial coverage of gold. Allow the adhesive to dry just enough to be sticky but not wet. I used mod podge and if applied in a thin coat, it dries in a few minutes so you have to work kind of quickly. Once the adhesive is dried properly, lay pieces of gold leaf over adhesive and very gently press it against the pumpkin. Use your fingers to slowly spread the gold pieces out to cover as much area as possible. Cover the pumpkin how you like and allow to dry completely. If the pumpkin you are displaying may be touched or bumped frequently, I recommend spraying/painting a layer of adhesive over the dried gilding for extra protection.
