Recently a list of the predicted top 12 selling toys for Christmas this year was released, and I must confess to having read the list feeling slightly bemused. I hadn’t heard of ANY of the toys listed. Well, apart from the LEGO. And why? Well, pretty much because my kids don’t watch adverts on TV. Ever.

Admittedly this is more of a side-effect of the way we watch TV in our house rather than a conscious decision. You see, we don’t watch live TV. We cancelled the Sky subscription a few years ago now, and the prescence of a line of trees between our house and the local TV aerial means we can’t watch terrestrial TV either. So it’s internet streaming all the way for us, with BBC iPlayer, Netflix and Amazon Instant Video being our main sources of kids TV shows. And none of these services broadcast adverts.

A few weeks ago I found a rather nice template to help children write their letters to Father Christmas, and passed the kids one blank each. I was interested to see what they’d come up with.

My son, whose sister helped with the writing, was pretty predictable. All he wants is cars and a monster truck.

His 7 year old sister is more interesting. I would imagine most 7 year old’s wish lists are filled with Frozen toys and other delights from that list of top presents. Not so my daughter. She wants some Barbie shoes, and lots of colouring and craft materials. To read she’d like the latest Strictly Come Dancing annual, and to eat she’d like chocolate and lasagne!

I love that at the ages of 7 and 4 my kids are still largely unaware of brands and the huge amount of toys vying for their attention. I don’t know how long it will continue, but it makes for a much less stressful Christmas when I don’t have to fight everyone else for that one “must have” toy that is on everyone elses list!
