83. READ.LOOK.THINK.

I always start each READ.LOOK.THINK. with a photo of mine, and I have been so slack with my camera recently I have almost run out. So here is a picture from a few months ago of some of the books in Sunday’s room. I’ve been collecting them with great happiness, long before she was born or even conceived, one at a time from Oxfam. Imagine my horror though when I (she) got given a Mr Men book for Christmas and it said on the back “Age 3 .” Are you serious? 2.5 years to go and she’ll only want me to read her Mr Men? This is a real blow.

And here is READ.LOOK.THINK. No first person essays by wordy women in this one. Were there none around or am I just bored of them?

READ: On the art of rejection. | Travel is sad because what we see doesn’t include us. | Goal posts. | Nancy Kerrigan v Tonya Harding, seared on my young 90s memory along with the attack on Monica Seles.

LOOK: California barley bowl. | Small Spells mugs and planters. | Chocolate avocado pudding. | INTERNET POETRY. | Wood saved from London’s “fallen giants.” | 1942 time capsule apartment discovered in Paris. Like Fabrice’s grandmother in Love in a Cold Climate: “If, in the third drawer of that bureau there is a filigree box containing a small gold key on a black velvet ribbon, this house belongs to me.” | Parisian oyster party.

THINK: Body atlas reveals where we feel happiness and shame. | Deliberate nonconformity shows that you can handle some ridicule because you’ve got social capital to burn. | Content strategy: the news versus the archive. | Scientific proof of one of my Dad’s favourite sayings: “you’re not nervous, you’re excited.”
