Capsule wardrobe challenge: how to wear a dress in winter

The burgundy dress was an extra addition to the winter capsule wardrobe. I like variety and I like to have fun with clothes, so it was great to play with the different silhouette of this dress.

A dress can be versatile too. As you know I like to wear them over pants, which makes for a warm and comfortable. look. You can also easily layer it over some warm shirt. I wore the booties with nude knee-high tights and some extra (invisible) short socks for extra warmth.

What you do need to take into account is that a tight dress like this needs a good bra. I usually grab my most comfortable bra but since this dress is tight AND has a very high waistline, getting the right bra is essential. I’m not wearing the best bra in these pictures (please see the bottom picture for a better one) and have since moved to my most uplifting bra getting the girls as high as possible in this dress.

I also like this column of color look layering with my asymmetrical vest.

It also looks great with my plaid scarf…

and blue poncho.

How to keep your legs warm when wearing dresses in winter?

One option is of course to wear your dress over skinnies as I showed you above. If you like to wear your dress on its own it’s important to get good tights or leggings.

I wore this dress with leggings from Uniqlo in the same color. Thick opaque or woollen tights may have been even better as they would include a foot part as well. I added short socks of the same color over my leggings so as not to get cold.

Your Challenge!

Wear a winter outfit that features a dress. See if you can also create a look that layers your dress over skinnies or leggings. Try to create 2 unique looks.

Want to show me and all the other women in our community your looks? Upload them to the private Facebook forum (style course members only), the 40 Style Facebook page or add a link to your photo in the comments below. If you managed to assemble your own capsule wardrobe, I’d love to see images of that also.

And here is how I wore it in Singapore recently (with a better bra).
