Holiday Crafts: Halloween Spider Ring Favors Using Cork Floor Protectors

Better Than Diamond Rings!

The theme for this month's Designer Craft Connection Blog Hop is "Autumn Crafts" and boy, did I have have fun with this project! On my last trip to the 99 cents store I spotted a package of cork floor protectors - small thin adhesive backed cork disks meant to keep furniture legs from scratching floors. My crafty mind hit the accelerator pedal with all kinds of ideas for how to use those handy little discs. (Sometimes ideas occur that way, in a blinding rush and sometimes they hide behind a fog and slowly, slowly come into focus. Sometime ideas wake you up in the middle of the night like a car alarm going off and sometimes they whisper gently throughout the week until you finally pay attention and listen. But I digress. :) )

With Halloween in the air, I decided to turn those little discs into cute stamped embellishments for favor boxes. I remember how much I loved the little toys that I'd get in my trick-or-treat bag from the neighbors who gave trinkets instead of candy. A kid could play with those tiny gifts long after all the candy was gone. So here's my project that transforms a 10 cent plastic ring into a fun Halloween gift which to a child would be more precious than a diamond ring!

Here's how:

Halloween Spider Ring Favors

Materials:

Tools

  • Ink stamp pads - black
  • Rubber stamps - Halloween themed - letters, spider, spider web
  • Die cut machine with flower dies and texture plate
  • Markers - orange, black
  • Needle tool or Kraft knife
  • Scissors

1. Stamp a cork disk with the stamps and the black ink pad. Add color with the orange marker and then color the thick sides with the black marker. **Tip - you might find it easier to cut apart the sheet of cork discs so that you can stamp them individually.

2. Use the die cut machine to cut flower shapes from the black and orange contruction paper in different sizes. Run the flower shapes through the machine again with the texture plate to add some texture. For a fun pop-up 3D effect, use Kool Tak™ 3D Black Foam Pads to stack and adhere three flower shapes together. **Tip – when applying the tiny foam pads, use the tip of your needle tool or kraft knife to spear a single pad from the large sheet. Apply the pad to your object then spear the pad again to remove the white release sheet and expose the adhesive.

3. Peel the white paper backing from a stamped cork disc and adhere it to the top of the flower stack.

4. Stamp the sides and top of the ring box with the rubber stamps and black ink pad. To finish, add a few Kool Tak™ 3D Black Foam Pads to the back of a flower stack and adhere it to the top of the the box lid. Nestle a plastic spider ring inside the box and then hand it out to some lucky trick-or-treaters!

How can you go wrong with a pack of 24 cork furniture protectors for a dollar? Turn them into mini magnets by gluing magnets to the backs or use them to decorate cards. Have fun decorating all the remaining cork discs!
