Maximum

Since getting back to Sydney, last light has become my favourite time to set up a tripod and run around on my street. While I am yet to figure out how it can be that my hair looks so very red in five o’ clock backlight, it is for this crisp and chilly half hour alone that I will continue buying coats, and wearing coats, well into Spring (marginally, but not entirely, influenced by pending Northern Hemisphere travels to nose-bleedingly snowy regions).

As a matter of personal policy, for the past two weeks, I have not left the house without my backside safely shielded from rain, hail or shine, by a bare minimum of a knee-length coat. And, I’ve never had more questions about a coat as I did this Teddy Bear affair on Instagram last week. Even when compared to confused exclamations surrounding my checked man coat, this cute and cuddly miss caused quite a stir.

Rightly so – it vibes that fantastic Céline Fall/Winter 2012 ballad with a friendlier-looking price-tag and a more versatile neutral palette. The plan is to continue wearing it until I’m sweating, with all incarnations of bright trousers (I’m planning on bottle green, royal blue, and salmon), white shift dresses, denim overalls, dominatrix leather, pyjama parties, and lace slips.

Once you’ve exhausted these permutations, the shell and shape works just as well as a coat-dress. For starters, consider this outfit without any pants (button it up, of course). Make that two: I tried belting it at the waist before dinner this evening, and the Audrey Hepburn feels are excellent. Then move on to the rest of your long, short, and newly malleable coat collection (this ASOS favourite is next in line). Plenty of options before Summer is upon us again.

As for you, Northern Hemisphere – you have no excuses.

Start brainstorming.

Winter is coming.
