Le Smoking

For all of its deadly consequences (and hear me: they are deadly), I have to say that I’m somewhat grateful for what the practice of smoking has done for fashion as we know it. Not for the scantily clad editorials with tendrils of white smoke obscuring the model’s face, or even for the cool factor Caroline de Maigret has me hooked on, but rather the garments that evolved for the sole purpose of the practice. Smoking jackets, or their modern incarnation as any kind of dark jewel-tone velvet blazer, were my bread and butter for the Winter of my first year out of high school. There’s something empowering about being enveloped in weighty fabric, with the sleeves pushed up, shoulders sharp, and Hugh Hefner vibes falling in your wake (probably the only time you would ever want to be vibing The Hef). Then, smoking slippers dominated my affections last year, thanks to Dolce & Gabbana.

And now, apparently, we have smoking trousers – which I’m not entirely sure existed at any point or culture in history, but if Joseph says, then Joseph goes. This time, we’re not swimming in velvet, and I’m unsure as to how silk would fair in a room swimming with blue cigar haze, but they fit like a glove, walk like a dream, and at the end of the day, I couldn’t care less.

As far as their origins are concerned, I have to say that I’m newly fascinated with the history of menswear, and whether I could pull together a womenswear editorial around it. That, and wearing pyjamas during Fashion Week essentially offsets any podiatric discomfort from unwise heel choices, and emotional stress from listening to the chatter of sleepy small talk in the line to press check-in. If smoking trousers are the answer to well-heeled Normcore, then I’m all in.

But please – don’t smoke.
