Runway Review: Jonathan Saunders Spring 2015

Where better for Jonathan Saunders to show his art-inspired SS15 collection than the British Museum. Finding inspiration in the lightness and creative possibilities of paper, Saunders played with origami-esque bows and folds, sheer shoulders and sleeves, and bubbled hems in ensembles that mixed and matched proportions and inspired layering that made us see new possibilities in our closets.

Known for embracing and exploring print-making techniques, Saunders showed dressed in shattered glass-like abstractions, obtained by printing the already constructed garments, allowing seams and folds to dictate the final pattern. Botanical embellishments scattered across pant suit separates channeling compositions by Spanish Surrealist Joan Miró.

Saunders color-scheme of blues and browns lent a soft romance to the looks, complemented by minimal makeup and loose waves. Copper, silver, and gold metallics and sequins added an avant-garde flair that kept things contemporary, and textural florals on tops, dresses, and skirts made for walking sculpture that was whimsical yet wearable.
