Fall 2013 New York Fashion Week: Donna Karan

If there is any designer who is allowed to add “New York” after their name, it’s Donna Karan.

Always designing with a New York woman in mind, Karan went back to her roots and evolved her Fall 2013 collection from the very foundation that made her name back in 1985 – “Seven Easy Pieces.” The idea stemmed from Karan’s urge to design a collection where seven individual pieces could be mixed and matched to create a fully integrated wardrobe that transitioned effortlessly from day to night. And that is exactly what she accomplished then and now.

This season, Karan’s foundation began with jersey and diffused itself into a pool of double-faced wools, hammered satins and slashed leather. Each look sculpted the body mixing matte with shine and sheer with skin. Accessories added an architectural element hardening the looks with metal, yet fur and diamante accents played a role in juxtaposing the mood. In the end, everything united under a textured color palate with essentially every shade of black and brown known to woman.

In describing the inspiration for her collection, Karan herself says it best, “These are clothes for women like me – who live and work 24/7 with passion and dress with emotion. I believe the body talks a language all its own. Depending on your DNA, these clothes say something new every time and create a statement all your own.”
