Fall 2013 London Fashion Week: Matthew Williamson

Autumn/winter 2013 marked a season of progression for Matthew Williamson, demonstrated by his unexpected use of smooth shapes, loose fits and geometric prints. His typical bohemia was saved for the collection of eclectic prints rather than throughout, instead, chunky knits and well-cut suits marked a fresh, youthful but considered silhouette.

Highlights included Hanne Gaby Odiele opening in a stiff yellow coat, sleek and minimal with chevron panels down either side. Chevron stripes in rainbow colours remained a focus, morphing in to ensembles featuring a mix of horizontal and vertical lines. Yellow was also a sticking point, while the outerwear marked the greatest success.

Beautifully vibrant blanket wool mid-length coats were slung over iridescent ombre skirts and dreamy landscape print tops – a look that remains from last season. Elsewhere a sumptuous taupe fur was teamed with a watery pale yellow and grey matching set, showing that layering and daywear in general is something the designer is newly dedicated to exploring. Matthew Williamson is of course a master of colour and his show this season was more transitional, and entirely world-appropriate in theme.

The finale of occasionwear provided further food for thought, Cara Delevingne in a turquoise topped lace dress with metallic silver mid-length skirt was wholly appealing while a silvery maxi dress worn over a prim blouse with lengths of dip dyed turquoise fringe added that wow factor.
