The Little Things Matter (on your face!): Hair Care

C O N F E S S I O N

I’m really boring with my daily makeup routine since I usually stick to the same neutral colors on my eyes. I like keeping my makeup relatively simple so I can let my clothes do the non-verbal communication…not that that’s much interesting either, but at least I make an effort to look polished and clean all the while feeling a bit of more confident as I step into the world ^^.

So why the sudden talk about makeup? Isn’t today’s topic about Hair Care?

So, wayyy before my interest in beauty and fashion ever really ignited, hair care and hairstyling has always been a fond interest of mine.

Maintaining healthy looking hair is something that’s often overlooked by many people, but it’s actually one of the most easily identifiable physical traits of a person. Taking good care of your hair can seriously rewind that time capsule, slice off those years in aging, and make you look more refreshing and youthful.

Learn my Hair Care tips inside!

Through trial & error over the years, here are some of my simple hair care tips anyone can try to work into their routine. *Keep in mind that everyone’s natural born hair texture is different so techniques and results will vary from person to person.

How to Maintain Healthy Luscious-looking Hair by a Self-professed hairstyle-obsessed chick

  • A Good Blow Dry – This is a very basic and necessary step that a lot of people miss but it’s really important. Think of it as the “foundation” for all the following steps ahead such as styling. Never blow dry your hair when it is 100% wet. The best time to blow dry your hair is when it’s at least 75% dry. All the better if it’s completely dry. Extreme heat and wet hair do not mix so put down that hair dryer girl…well until it’s at least 75% dry! (It’s for your good, I promise because fried hair is not a good look.)
  • Get a Trim – This differs from person to person depending on how fast your hair grows. Getting a trim now and then to get rid of split-ends will help lighten the load AND make your hair feel & look fresh.
  • Go Natural Once in Awhile– Give your hair a break from all the heating equipment once in awhile. I’m talking: curling iron, straightening iron, or any tools that put heat onto your hair. Your hair also needs a break from all you do to it.
  • Do Something – Quite the opposite of what’s mentioned above, doing nothing to your hair can be equally damaging because you don’t care to maintain the condition of your hair. Beautiful healthy hair takes time and dedication. You don’t want your hair to look like a mop, right?
  • Maintenance – Take the precautionary steps to protect your hair before you apply any heat to it. Consider things like a hair-protectant, mousse, a styling crème, and a hair masque 1 or 2x a week.
  • Get Creative – Styling your hair doesn’t necessarily mean you have to apply heat to it or risk damage every time. Hair is fun and it’s a form of personal expression. There are a lot of ways to rock cute hairstyles without all the heat damage :)

Joyce’s Hair Care Products

I have more hair products in my bathroom cabinet, but not to bore you, I’ll just share with you my favorites that I use on the daily.

In no particular order:

  1. Garnier Fructis “Surf Hair” Texture Paste Matte Effect: Just a little is enough to nourish the ends of my hair after I curl it. This texture of this product is moisturizing enough so this method works as well instead of its intended “surfer” hair effect. I don’t really fancy the smell since it’s strong but hey, for the moisturizing effects, I’ll take it.
  2. Garnier Fructis Fortifying Deep Conditioner 3 Minute Masque: Absolutely fantastic. I use this 1 or 2x a week to bring my hair “back to life”. I use this product when I’m in the shower after I’ve rinsed off my shampoo. Works great.
  3. Lucido-L Designing aqua Hair Curl Lotion : Got this product when I was at Watson’s(amazing drugstore) in Taipei. This product gives you the most effortless curls :) Not sure where I can purchase this back in America though, anyone have any recommendations? :T
  4. Got2B Guardian Angel Gloss Finish Flat Iron Balm: I forgot I even had this heat protectant in my bathroom cabinet until I was writing up this post lol. This product works but it kind of smells. Just a few spritz is all that’s needed for glossy hair whether you’re just blow drying your hair or actually using a flat iron. I don’t reach for this product much because I prefer the look of voluminous hair over straight hair these days.
  5. TRESemme Mousse #4 Hold: Smells really fresh!! This is what I use to achieve voluminous hair ^^;
  6. Gatsby Moving Rubber Air Rise: Bought this in Taipei 2 years ago while visiting family there. I still have tons of product left.. Seriously, only a little is needed for your entire head. A little goes a long way for that airy Asian hair look.
  7. Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Humidity Styling Cream: This has been a favorite and repurchase of mine since high school! (A very long time indeed…) I always repurchase this product. Why I love styling creams- they work wonders on frizzy hair or fly-aways. Just apply a little before you blow dry your hair for silky-smooth hair!

Snip, snip! | Hair Cut

I thought about it for a while– whether to grow out my shoulder length hair or get a trim. I’ve had short hair for awhile now, maybe 2 years? So, long hair would be something different, a change. But was long hair for me…anymore? It always felt long, heavy, and such a pain LOL. So…I did what naturally had to be done; got my hair trimmed. I have my short hair back now HOORAY. At the end of the day, short hair just feels more “me” :).
