Inner Radiance: Self Acceptance

Welcome to our new series all about: Inner Radiance

What is inner radiance? In our belief:

It’s about tuning in to that inner dialogue inside of you to better understand yourself so you can exude both internal and external beauty.

Let’s take a dive into the deep end of the spectrum together and talk about: Self Acceptance. Today’s topic will get a bit more personal so keep an open mind while reading. Alex has also covered the topic of self acceptance on our blog. Take a look at her post here which inspired me to write this post today :). Self-confidence and self-acceptance goes hand-in-hand. It took me all throughout high school and college to get a better sense of who I was and who I could be. Of course, I still don’t have it all together since I’m in my early twenties and still figuring things out. I may make mistakes, but I will own up to them, so I can continue to learn, change, and grow.

They say your twenties are a pivotal time in ones life to mold the foundation for life ahead of you. I’d like to think the expression is true. What do you think?

Here are some things I’ve learned over the years which I’d like to share. (Without my parents support, Buddha’s guidance, my friends, all the people who have been supportive (including people who read our blog and comment frequently! thank you for your support), and the combination of (good & bad) life experiences thus far, I wouldn’t be who I am today. So, thank you life-to everyone and everything that has happened. I have a long way to go and I am learning everyday.

Hope you enjoy my doodles below~ :)

Start Within.

Self acceptance has to start from within. We all have our ‘life stories’, but it’s important to not let that take ahold of you.(Sometimes I forget to remember this too~I’m human, afterall.) There are some things we can’t change: genetics, race, the family or socio-economic class you’re born into, the way you look- perhaps (although that’s a different topic). But there are things you can change- your relationship with yourself (do you like yourself?), your relationship with others, and your own life. Ultimately, you are the driver of your life; not someone else.

Honesty

Authenticity applies in all facets of life. If you half-ass the results, what do you think you’re going to get? Keep it real, with yourself and with others (but do not be mean-spirited because no one likes to be around a jerk).

Be Yourself.

In life, it’s important to stay true to yourself. I do not mean staying stagnant and never changing for the better in life. What I’m saying is, a lot of people try to copy or do what’s supposedly “cool” or in at the moment just to be “accepted” but are you truly happier? Why spend all that energy trying to be someone you’re not? It’s tiring and the truth will eventually come out. Why not be a first-rate version of yourself? If you look at anyone who is established or well known in their lives, would you say they are originals? I would say so! That is something to think about. If people don’t like you for who you really are, then maybe you should re-evaluate the people you are surrounding yourself with.

Think Outside of Yourself for once.

Too often, we are all consumed in our own problems.(Same here, I’m guilty of it too at times *raises hand* -.- Work in process!) Say, you reach a small goal or milestone in your life. Yet, you’re still unsatisfied and can’t even enjoy the accomplishment you just reached because of that yearning for more. When is enough, enough? Do you think we are too selfish and individualistic as a society? Volunteering, giving back, simply just doing a small gesture for someone else, or giving a (genuine) compliment to someone else can make all the difference in another person’s day or life.

Passion.

Although I’m still trying to figure out my path in life, I do have a better grasp of my aspirations today(compared to years ago when I was a teen or student) which I’m step-by-step working towards. I can only try my best, which I think is an earnest effort. If you’re in high school, university, or going through that transition young-adult phase of finding yourself(like myself…post-grad) and finding all these nervous anxiety ridden emotions, try taking a few deep breaths to calm your mind. Then, take that energy and turn it towards your passion or something positive such as exercising, volunteering, taking up a old or new hobby, etc. Sometimes even just talking to someone who you can confide in or give you sound advice is a great way to center yourself so you don’t go crazy. Life is a continual learning process as I’d like to think. Everything takes time. Take it step by step. Sometimes, just getting out of your own element is good for your mental health and very beneficial for revitalization purposes. If anything, tuning in to your ‘gut feeling’ never fails. Believe in yourself because you are your own biggest motivator.

Let me know if any of these thoughts resonate with you!
