My interview with Therapie Boutique

Style on the go!!!
I got the chance to interview Kelly, the owner of San Diego's only Fashion Truck, Therapie Boutique. I absolutely love the idea of having a Fashion Boutique on the go. The idea is original and very unique. I first heard about Therapie Boutique at a local Farmers Market here in San Diego early this year. Kelly has wonderful pieces and great accessories as well.

How did you come up with the idea of starting a boutique on the go? I was looking at what the food trucks were doing and said if they can do it, then I can. I was really attracted to the idea of bringing the shopping experience to the customer. I love fashion, and I knew I could connect with other San Diegans who’d love it as much as I do if I could take my “store” all over town. I can go to people’s homes, farmers markets, local events, and fundraisers. How did you come up with the name of your boutique? I have been in the retail business for over 23 years, and when I owned my own boutique, customers would come in and say that shopping is like therapy for them. I can completely relate to that; it’s my therapy too! So, when I opened the truck, I knew it had to be named Therapie. Who is your dream client? Who would you like to work with? I love my fellow shoppers...the women who love fashion and accessories as much as I do. I think the busier my customer, the more fun I have when we’re able to connect and she finds exactly what she’s looking for to add to her wardrobe—even if she only has 30 minutes during a lunch break to shop!
What is the best part of having a boutique on the go? Since Therapie is mobile, I have the advantage of being able to bring my business to the customer,as opposed to a storefront that only gets the business of the people who happen to be in the area that day. I think it’s so amazing I am able to do anything—the sky is the limit! Therapie Boutique brings shopping therapy to every woman—we are, like our tag line, Style on the Go!
Can you share any tips or advice for someone who is starting their own business? It’s really important to believe in yourself...working for yourself can be really tough sometimes, but if you have the confidence to know that you can do it, you’ll be successful. Of course, you have to be willing to work hard—sometimes we have Therapie events seven days a week! The hard work is worth it, though, when you have the joy of doing what you love to do for your job.
What was your most rewarding moment? I’d have to say my favorite memory with Therapie so far was our Grand Opening in March 2012. Being able to show all my friends and colleagues my vision was incredibly profound.San Diego was in for a makeover!
How would you describe your personal style? My style is classic contemporary with a little bit of edge. I bring that attitude to Therapie, where I offer something for everyone no matter your age, style, or size Therapie Boutique has something for everyone.
Has living in San Diego influenced your style and the style of your boutique? Well, for one, with many events I often host a local artist/designer for trunk shows. I want to be able to support local artists and give them a platform to show and sell their creations. Other than that, I think the fun, relaxed atmosphere that San Diego had definitely plays a part in my style and in the fashions featured in Therapie. We want to look good, and there’s no need to get uptight about it!
When it comes to fashion, who or what inspires you? I read lot of vintage looks. I am obsessed with the styles of 60’s and 70’s and I love the challenge of bringing those looks into a contemporary style that’s fun but that’s more “chic and stylish” than “costume party.”
Do you have anything coming up that you would like to share? Events, promotions, specials? Yes! We have created a special holiday shopping night at 57Degrees on December 2 from 2 to 6 PM called Glimmer, which features women-owned businesses. It’s going to be a ton of fun...how can you beat shopping and wine? Also, I just launched the Therapie website, complete with online shopping and an e-newsletter. I’ll be sending out e-mails with the Therapie schedule so everyone knows where to find us!
