A Ghost Town Called High Point Market


Last week I visited a real, live ghost town. Well, an occupied ghost town. It’s complicated… let me explain. There’s this place in High Point, North Carolina, miles away from any major city or tourist attraction, and twice a year thousands of designers, buyers, and editors descend on it for one of the largest international furniture markets! Beautiful products (furniture, rugs, art, lighting, accessories, and more) from esteemed manufacturers and vendors are put on display long before retail stores have them on their shelves. Here’s a bit of context for your reference… 80,000 attendees… 12 million square feet of showroom space… And I was there! (thanks Beth and Carolina for bringing me along for Pulp Design Studios!) Disclaimer: please forgive my amateur photography for this post. When a gal is faced with 12 million square feet of showrooms to visit, things get a little speedy and blurry! You understand. And then after a week of hurried shopping and frantic note-taking, it’s all over, everyone goes home, and the place is empty! A real, live modern day ghost town. But the most amazing part of my adventure – besides the stunning designs, of course? I survived with not one blister or lost (...)
