Sir John Barbirolli Conducts Bela BartokConcerto for Orchestra - The Hungarian Radio Orchestra

BELA BARTOK Concerto for Orchestra, Sz 116 Hungarian Radio Orchestra SIR JOHN BARBIROLLI, conductor Recorded in Budapest, 26 September 1961
This is a real rarity, Sir John captured live conducting the music of Bela Bartok in Hungary. It is a wonderful performance, quite difrferent from the sharp-as-a-razor sounding versions we have come to expect today. It has a warmer, fuller sound with somewhat less of a modern "edge" to it than Reiner or Solti. The tape itself was rather problematic, with some very bad print through being quite annoying. This type of blemish is very difficult to fix since it occupies the same frequency range as the music you wish to keep. The Gnome has outdone himself on this one and the offending 'ghost' seems to have been almost entirely exorcized.
Bonus ASK THE COMPOSER -- BELA BARTOK Sonatine for Piano Suite for Piano, Op.14 First Rondo for Piano Evening in the Country DITTA BARTOK, piano Suite from Mikrokosmos (arr. Serly) DITTA BARTOK, piano String Ensemble TIBOR SERLY, Conductor Recorded at the Brooklyn Museum, 1944
As a little Christmas stocking stuffer here is a radio program originally broadcast on WNYC which features Bartok's wife, Ditta, playing his music in concert along with commentary by "Dr. Bartok" himself. The final work on the program is Tibor Serly's arrangement of six pieces from MIKROKOSMOS arranged for piano and strings. The movements are:
1. Peasant Dance 2. Free Variations 3. Bourreé 4. Ostinato 5. Bulgarian Dance #4 6. Bulgarian Dance # 6
Please enjoy. These last half dozen or so postings came at a fast and furious rate. I'll be catching my breath a bit until the clock strikes 2014. Please enjoy and I hope the coming year holds nothing but good health and happiness for you all.....and much great music.

Addendum: Thanks to our Barbirolli expert for dating the performance. - PH
