Sir John Barbirolli Conducts Berlioz - Hallé Orchestra 1969

HECTOR BERLIOZ Symphonie Fantastique, Op. 14 Hallé Orchestra SIR JOHN BARBIROLLI, conductor Recorded 12 December 1969
I have a real soft spot for the last performance a conductor gives of any composition. I like to think that it represents his final thoughts on the work developed over a lifetime. I suppose it could also be the feeble attempt of a past-his-prime conductor to attempt a piece one last time. Cut me some slack, Jack, and don't burst my bubble!
Here is a another rare BBC recording made live in the studio without an audience like the Bax Symphony No. 4. This may be the last time Sir John conducted the work and it makes a very fine companion to the Houston Symphony Harold in Italy of 2 December posted earlier (the SWF Symphony version of the Fantastique dates from February, 1969).
