{things i learned} how to shop winter coats

I love coats and jackets–sure, they're bulky to store and are only in use for a portion of the year but they finish a look in one fell swoop like nothing else. Of course, multiples are something of a fashion necessity since one style definitely does not fit all when it comes to occasions requiring outerwear. Fleshing out your closet can be a bit overwhelming so I took a long hard look at mine to find four must-have categories for winter dressing. Start with a full-length wool coat–dressy, classy, and timeless, the less adorned your pick, the better. A cropped leather biker/moto jacket is perfect for more casual outings, and works amazingly well layered with scarves, sweaters, or vests. If you live someplace super chilly, a tailored down jacket is a must (keep looking to try to avoid bulk as much as possible). Lastly, have some fun and pick out something a bit trendy and less practical–go with untraditional details, bright colors, or a pattern–just make sure it's not that costly so you won't regret the "investment."
