Context

"I often recall these words when I am writing, and I think to myself, “It’s true. There aren’t any new words. Our job is to give new meanings and special overtones to absolutely ordinary words.” I find the thought reassuring. It means that vast, unknown stretches still lie before us, fertile territories just waiting for us to cultivate them." - Haruki Murakami

When it comes to day dresses, I prefer those that allow the body to move with complete liberty. I'd rather spare myself some constrictive struggle, making sure instead to wear what demands the least from me. Ideally? Dresses without structure and skirts so short the body gestures on its own terms. This summer, I plan to live as an exposer of all the right places.

I was talking with my teacher the other day about the power of artistic impression. How words can inspire an entirely new thought based on the way they're represented visually--contextual stimulation. She gave the example of reading a novel in its authentic binding versus reading its modern publication; or watching live performances in those small, lackluster theaters as opposed to the sweeping grandiose stages. You connect on entirely different terms for each, because your mind either compensates for what it expects, or redefines the scope of its perception based on what's there. I think it's one of the reasons I'm so drawn to fashion. The most magnificent designers are those whose collections create a moving purpose--who can inspire clothing with an artistic context that alters their entire impression. Even a piece as simple as a monochromatic dress. Despite lacking all shape and complexity, it can influence boundless interpretations. It can have an incorruptible charm when modestly styled, or a brilliant energy when placed against a technicolor spectrum. It can glide sensually, or stride purposefully. It's all about attitude of imagery and making new what's been worn a thousand times over.
