Flash Finish

After I finished getting the house ready for my friends' visit tomorrow, I had a little time to sew today. While it was tempting to get started on my "Let's Book It" project for the month, I decided to do something quick and fun. I've had this project on my to-do list for at least a year...ever since the free pattern appeared on the Fons & Porter website last year: The Grim Ripper.

Isn't that a hoot? I didn't really expect to finish it in one afternoon, but one thing led to another and then...

Ta-Da!
This is made completely from scraps, including scrap batting and scrap binding. First I fused everything down.

Then I had to decide how to top-stitch the applique. Eventually, I decided on a straight stitch, but I made the quilt sandwich first so that the top-stitching also serves as the quilting.

It's always hard to photograph such a dark background, but I think you can get the idea in the image below.

I used metallic thread for the blade of the seam ripper, and then gave it a little gleam at it's pointy tip.

Then I decided to quilt a spiderweb into the upper left corner...just to make it ever so much scarier.

And then I stitched on the binding and voila!

This will be my NewFO project for the month, even though I broke the rules and finished it.

And speaking of the NewFO Challenge, you have until one minute before midnight tomorrow to link up to the September linky party. Link up with your new projects for September, finished or not, to be eligible to win the schoolhouse quilt block lapel pin.

After tomorrow, the party's over.
Finally, I'm happy to report that I managed to score five more pounds of Roma tomatoes at the farmer's market yesterday. I'll add in the final tomatoes from my own greenhouse and make some more tomato chutney. That stuff is so good!

That will have to wait until Tuesday, however, because tomorrow I'm welcoming good friends Deb and Tom into my home for the night, and I am so excited to see them. Their daughter recently moved to Oregon, and so I'm hoping to get to see them more often now.

Oh yes, and also on tomorrow morning's agenda...the big squash. Is there a better way to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month?

If you're due for your big squash, what are you waiting for?
