Heather Sten: Before The Rain

Before The Rain by Heather StenHather Sten is a young American photographer, working and living in New York. The project Before The Rain was realised in 2013, during her voyage through the American South. It’s a fictional story comprising extemporaneous themes that came up during a long drive through unfamiliar landscapes. In this piece of work the photographer explores the uncanny and the sublime, but she intends to do it in a cautious and thoughtful way,weaving a common thread across the series. The still composition and calm colours not only give the project a certain consistency, but also create a peculiar feeling of melancholy. „My imagination is underpinned by a sense of wonder in a new mythology in American landscapes, overgrowth and neglect of the surrounding objects and vegetation, the fragile sense of nostalgia, and the quietness that takes over.” Words: Heather Sten, Thisispaper Photography: Heather Sten
