François Chambard: Odd Harmonics

Odd Harmonics by François Chambard Odd Harmonics is a a collection of twelve, custom built theremins created by designer François Chambard. Theremin is one of the first electronic music instruments and you've probably heard the sound it makes in countless horror movie soundtracks. François Chambard, founder of UM Project, a Brooklyn based design studio, handcrafted the theremins by giving their traditional boxy form an unconventional aesthetic that reminds robotic creatures. The collection was first shown at the Judith Charles Gallery in NYC in October 2013. It is currently exhibited at the Makers Biennal at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in NYC. "The Odd Harmonics collection combines different influences that yield a rich and colorful language: mid-century design, Bauhaus-Pop, Memphis, Steampunk. Like other creations by François Chambard, the success of the pieces relies on original design, impeccable execution, the use of rich and honest materials, as well as the emphasis on connections and details. The result is graphic and colorful details, highly noticeable and memorable, reminiscent of old joinery techniques and traditional craftsmanship, yet totally in sync with the digital age and appealing to the modern eye."
