Córka Rybaka: A/W 2014 Collection

A/W 2014 Collection by Córka RybakaWhile it's true that many hands make light work, one gifted and motivated person is sometimes enough to produce extraordinary results, as proven by the example of one avid knitter from Warsaw. Córka Rybaka, Polish for Fisherman's Daughter, is a one person knitwear brand based in Warsaw. The story behind it is a heart-warming one. While on vacation in Levanzo, the brand's founder Monika met an elderly fisherman that could easily be mistaken for an Ernest Hemingway twin, thanks to his grey beard and red knitted beanie. His love for hats was born out of necessity rather than style, though. In 1976 he came down with sinusistis after being exposed to gale during tuna fishing, and had to wear a hat ever since. The lack of quality in hand knitted hats inspired Monika to fill the gap in the market and Córka Rybaka was launched. Operating from her apartment in Warsaw's district of Mokotow, Monika knits beanies while looking after her little son. All photographs for Córka Rybaka's lookbook were taken by photographer Kuba Dąbrowski, Monika's partner both in life and in her creative endeavours. They feature the couple's close friends and more distant acquaintances, creating a portrait of not only the hats, but also Warsaw's inhabitants. Words: Thisispaper Photography: Kuba Dąbrowski
