Jennilee Marigomen: Window Seat

Window Seat by Jennilee Marigomen Jennilee Marigomen's ability to capture ordinary scenes with extraordinary feeling is something to keep an eye on. Jennilee, an emerging fine-art photographer based in Vancouver, British Columbia, is earning international recognition fast. Her first book, Second Nature, published in 2011, has already been added to the Artist Book Collection at the MoMA Library. Now Jennilee Marigomen presents Window Seat, her second book of photographs taken in sleepy beach towns in Mexico. Color and softness of her work, along with her eye for finding the sublime in the everyday, make the process of communing with her photography almost meditative. Through a series of simple and beautiful gestures, the project acknowledges the metaphor of photography-as-window. The photographs show the benefit of careful attention to the overlooked and often ephemeral beauty in our everyday surroundings. "This is not to say that the strength of Marigomen’s photographs is solely their formal beauty. While many focus on the play of geometry, light, color, and tone, the themes in Window Seat echo broader trends in her work. The ambiguous interplay ofobjects —both man-made and natural—persists throughout the images: plants, horses, birds, and dogs populate the series, showing Marigomen’s attention to the ways in which organic forms meet man-made objects and how man-made objects communicate with their natural surroundings. While it’s popularly held that the boundaries be- tween nature and culture are artificially drawn, Marigomen’s photographs pose the question without positing a clear answer."
