O’Neill Rose Architects: West Side Townhouse

West Side Townhouse by O’Neill Rose ArchitectsO’Neill Rose Architects is a Brooklyn-based architecture practice launched by a Devin O’Neill and his wife Faith Rose. When the architects were asked to renovate the Upper West Side townhouse, one in a row of nine townhouses designed by George H. Budlong in 1880s, their main intention was to restore the undeniable elegance of the space. However, it wasn’t that obvious at first as the building went through almost twenty different renovations over the course of its existence. It means that its once-gracious proportions had been drastically disturbed with a tangle of interior staircases and slapdash additions at the back. „We wanted to recapture its elegance, but create a totally contemporary home,” describes the idea Devin O’Neill. To achieve this goal, the architects removed the whole interior and replaced it with a steel structure. They, however, repaired the façade and re-crafted certain exterior details based on the nearby Budlong-designed townhouses. By doing so, the architects created a completely new building behind the original stone wall. Details such as plaster cornices, baseboards, and wall trim made the interior more contemporary, while remaining respectful to its stylistic origins. In this project, the architects were collaborating with a talented team of Polish craftsmen, versed in the old-fashioned art of plasterwork. “The key is finding people who also enjoy making things, and working closely with them,” says O’Neill. “They are the real artists of this project.” Words: Thisispaper Photography: Michael Moran
