Archiproba: DI_Telegraph

DI_Telegraph by Archiproba Moscow-based architecture practice Archiproba took up the challenge to adapt the abandoned building of the Central Telegraph, located on Tverskaya street in the centre of Moscow, for technology company Dream Industries. The Central Telegraph building was designed by architect Ivan Rerberg in 1927 and quickly became an architectural monument, with an unusual perimeter structure that had both modernist and constructivist features. Its surprising geometry and broad glazing distinguished the building against a background of the Stalinist empire style of that era. Archiproba's task was to return the space to its original state. Bare and cleansed of everything superfluous, the building was returned to its 1927 appearance. Brick piers, concrete columns, ceiling with traces of rough wooden casing from the 1920s and 80-year-old wooden frames speak eloquently for themselves, referencing the building's history. Meanwhile, the interior has been divided into separate parts according to the client's requirements. The first part, adjacent to the entrance, is a space for educational seminars and conferences. Next to this space there is a kiosk, a simple construction from glass and metal. In one side of it there is a mini-café, with a window looking at the hall. The other side acts as a transparent meeting room with its own separate entrance. The final result of the adaptation is a concise and efficient workspace perfectly exposing the constructivist features the great construction showcases. This minimalistic project is a great example of a restoration that respects the original structure. Words: Thisispaper Images: Ilya Ivanov
