Jusqu’au 8 mars prochain, la Galerie Da-End présente une exposition personnelle de Davor Vrankić, dessinateur croate, devenu français d’adoption depuis les années 1990. Avant de se laisser engloutir par l’univers visuel proliférant de l’artiste, c’est avant tout sa technique virtuose qui saute aux yeux et donne le vertige.
Souvent de grands formats, les dessins de Vrankić présentent une impressionnante complexité graphique. Composées d’une multitude de traits fins qui viennent noircir le papier à mesure qu’ils se superposent, ses œuvres donnent à voir des scènes surréalisantes au rendu, lui, hyperréaliste.
Sans autre références visuelles que sa propre imagination, Davor Vrankić commence chaque nouvelle œuvre sans savoir où l’idée qu’il a en tête va le mener, s’adonnant ainsi à un exercice où la spontanéité règne. Un univers fascinant et empreint de spiritualité dont l’on pressent que le calme cache une inquiétante tempête.
Until March 8th, the Galerie Da-End is presenting « Tentation d’Éveil (Wakening Temptation) », a new solo exhibition by Croatian but Paris-based artist Davor Vrankić.
Born in 1965 in Osijek, Davor Vrankić studied classical engraving at the School of Fine Arts of Sarajevo, before discovering a more conceptual and minimalist approach in Zagreb. Working between Paris, New York and Zagreb for the past 20 years, he has explored continuously the various possibilities offered by lead mine. Often of a large format, the artist’s artworks show an impressive graphic complexity. Composed of a logorrheic flood of thin lines that darken the paper with a remarkable variety of textures, his virtuoso drawings picture figurative and oneiric scenes, taken straight from his endless imagination.
Starting each work without reference pictures nor preliminary sketches, Davor Vrankić launches an assault on the blank page before letting the drawing imposing itself to him. If until now his obsessions had him saturating the space with characters, striving to technical prowesses in the rendering of details and materials, trying to turn our perceptions upside down, the body of work presented at Galerie Da-End unveils a new aspect of his art.
