Blue Hollyburn Skirt

So I'm a little behind on the times here but I made my first Hollyburn Skirt! I say first because I am certain there will be more! Very certain.

This was my first time working with an indie pattern (gasp!) and it was such a pleasure. The instructions were clear and had great pictures and I felt confident at every step. I enjoyed it so much I actually stretched it out over a couple of days to get the maximum amount of sewing enjoyment out of it. Sewing dork alert.

I made a straight size 12 straight out of the packet with no muslin and was stoked to have it fit perfectly. I was pretty confident that I could make it without a muslin after reading reviews that the fit is spot on.

I made View C and after trying it on I lopped off some fabric to make it sit above my knee. I'm 5"2 (and proud!) but it does present a problem when making skirts. I need to have them sit above the knee so I don't dwarf myself. I ended up taking 11 centimetres off the front and 8 centimetres off the back to cover my booty.

I also opted to make it a lapped zipper because I like the look of them and I find them easier to sew.

I love this fabric, both the colour and the fun print. It's some kind of mystery fabric that has the look and weight of linen but drapes like a lightweight cotton. The weave is quite loose making the skirt a little sheerer than I'd like but I'm hoping the colour and the drape of the fabric will allow me to get away with it.

I've never been one of those bloggers that show the innards of my clothes before but I think my sewing has reached a level where I can proudly show off my seams. Here goes!

I can't wait to make some summery tops to go with this skirt. And I'm sure there'll be more Hollyburn skirts in the works too. Stay tuned.
