YM&C Exclusive Q&A: Rachel & Nicole

You Me & Charlie is hosting exclusive interviews with creators inspired by The Hunger Games as part of the #MockingjayArtist series.

Rachel and Nicole Effendy’s love and passion towards fashion photography really shows through their always-unique projects. Their style is fun, carefree and filled with so much color and life that you can practically see their genuine personalities reflected in every single one of their shots.

The sisters, and currently residents of New York City, have the kind of artistic vision that keeps you interested and impatient about what their next adventure will be. From their Orange Is The New Black set to their representation of the Districts of Panem, Rachel and Nicole’s take on fashion is so fresh that, by the time you’re done seeing all their amazing sets of photographs, you will love them just as much as we do.

But in case that isn’t enough, here’s a little Q&A just to get to know them better.

If you could describe yourselves with a song, which one would it be?
Rachel: Grace Kelly by Mika
Nicole: You got the love by the Source

What made you think of fashion as a line of work?
We’ve always been inspired by the arts. We like to think of ourselves as artists, and fashion is our medium (and in our blood). Our mother was a fashion designer back in the day, so us entering the fashion world came naturally to us.

Where does inspiration come from for Nicole and Rachel?
Anywhere and everywhere. We know it sounds like a common answer but it’s true!

The Hunger Games Trilogy artwork is fantastic! How do you relate to the rebellious nature of the whole “them vs us” dynamic and how did that help in creating a fashion representation of some of the districts?
We are engineers and we are fighting the stereotype that science and art don’t mix. But we are here to prove these one-track minds wrong.

Fashion is ____.
Art

What do you enjoy the most in a photo shoot?
Conceptualization. We enjoy the beginning process of creating and brainstorming initial ideas to produce the final images.

And finally, if you were residents of Panem, would both of you be living in the same district, or different ones?
We would probably live in different districts as we have very different lifestyles. We’ll send a postcard to each other once in a while though.
