Book Club #4: The Life Of Hunger

Hey y'all! In case you're not aware of this, I recently launched a book club here on the blog. I know it's not really related to fashion but I also think that is quite important for everyone (inside and outside the fashion industry) to read more. This book marks the entry number four on the club, one of my favorite books from my favorite author in the entire world. Seriously, it's a masterpiece. Book Club #4 is The Life of Hunger, by Amélie Nothomb.
El Book Club #4 es The Life of Hunger, de Amélie Nothomb.

Book: The Life of Hunger, by Amélie Nothomb. You can buy it at www.bookdepository.com
Hunger, what an odd thing to feel... Amélie Nothomb writes most of her books from an autobiographical perspective. On The Life Of Hunger she describes her life from the childhood years to the young adult phase. Daughter of diplomats, she was always on the move. Born in Japan, raised in China, finding life in New York and fighting misery in Malaysia, she lived a lot of things, she has a lot to say.

During each chapter of this book, Nothomb talks about hunger and how it has been a crucial feeling in her life. Not only hunger for food, she was hungry for books, for love, for attention, for beauty. This was the first book I read from Nothomb and I was instantly captivated, the way she describes the world around her is magnificent. She was a rebellious child, obsessed with experiencing everything. She fell in love with Japan and made me feel I loved it as well (and I did love it when I had the chance to go), the way every page makes you feel is beyond description.

When people hear about hunger, they immediately think about poverty or eating disorders but what Amélie Nothomb has to say about it is told from a different perspective. Imagine being in love with someone but also invisible to that person, to be so depressed that the only thing you want to do is read and learn from other characters, to be the favorite kid in the classroom and have the others fight just to hold your hand... All those scenarios are present on The Life Of Hunger and trust me, once you read something from her, your hunger for Nothomb will never be satiated.
