Last month, the Babycakes went from being my only child to being Baby Z’s big brother overnight, and it’s been an easy transition, for the most part. Although he wants a little extra attention these days, he doesn’t begrudge the attention his sister receives; in fact, he loves to show her off. He’s also very protective of her (he can say “Don’t touch her face!” in English and German), and he loves to sing to her (also in English and German).
Soon they’ll be hanging out and sharing secrets, working our nerves and making us proud, and all the other things siblings do. They’ll also be figuring out how to navigate the world with their multiple identities –American, German, black, and more– together. Knowing this makes me happy.
